User Management Resource Administrator is an extremely powerful tool that has for me, proved itself capable of performing any task connected with the creation and management of users in windows networks, whether or not you are using Active Directory - the significance of this, is that the tasks can be applied to many users at one go. The tool is saving me enormous amounts of time and I would recommend it to any administrator who is managing large networks. For me the key feature this tool offers is the ability to manage AD parameters such as environment settings for Terminal Service users this feature is not available in many similar products.

The icing on the cake is the exemplary support the company gives. I can't fault their enthusiasm and ability to help, often exceeding the level that could be expected from a standard support agreement.

Last summer we migrated our entire network from Windows NT to Windows 2003 in 7 weeks, using Windows XP for the workstations.

One last job was left:

In 2 days time, 300 colleagues and 3000 students would need to access the network. This meant that the user accounts would have to be created in Active Directory, put into the right OU and assigned to security groups. Also, students get their own home directories including special user rights assignments.

We contacted Tools4ever some months in advance and tested the UserManagemeNT product, which basically met all our requirements. That being said, 2 days time to get all colleagues and students inside our Active Directory was not exactly comfortable.

So first we contacted Tools4ever again and found out that a new version of the software, called User Management Resource Administrator, was available. Before using SpaceGuard SRM we spent a lot of time controlling disk space usage on our central file server. We had lots of problems convincing our end-users to stop wasting home directory space on files that were not business related.

As network administrator in a busy high school, I had a problem creating 1100 pupils and 140 staff after a major network upgrade. Our old user creation module was not compatible with the new system, a fact I only found out 2 weeks before the start of term! Tonbridge School is a boy’s boarding school with five academic years. The students have access to the Internet both in the classrooms and in their Private Studies all of which is un-supervised after school hours. School work has to be backed up daily and archived until they leave. Without some means of managing the amount of data stored on their network shares not only would our hard drives fill up with rubbish from the Internet, large e-mail attachments, music files and anything else that seemed a good idea at the time but also our tape backups would be unreasonably stretched. We trialled various means of managing disk space and Spaceguard SRM was a clear winner. It is easy to install, has a minimal footprint on the server and an excellent front end that clearly shows the status of the network shares. You can even watch share quota changing in real time. It allows you to warn users at preset points as their allowance is used up. Notification is by pop-up and e-mail and even paging services and the messages the user receives can be customised. During installation there was part of the setup we didn’t fully understand, support was both instant and friendly with follow up to ensure that all was satisfactory. For a busy school with over 760 students, a set it and forget it installation is needed, Spaceguard is exactly that. The only subsequent management is for students who require extra space for large projects and this extra space and or limits can also be modified on an individual basis. Spaceguard is excellent value for money, beating the competition easily on price and performance and has made our users account management far simpler.

Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun is a school located in South Wales, UK with over 900 pupils. Year on year we have to create approx 350 new user accounts from data supplied to us from our local education authority in CSV format. Creating the user accounts manually was a very tedious process which no one enjoyed and which tied up staff at one of our busiest times of the year. We needed another way of doing this and after reviewing several different products I settled on UMRA. Key for me was

Cost was a consideration but I factored in the time saved over 3 years as a purchase justification for my line manager.
We got notified of an impending OFSTED inspection and our main file server somehow corrupted NTFS and share permissions for our 1750+ students quite randomly. We had two days to get the permissions fixed and tested prior to the OFSTED inspectors being in the school. On Monday I launched UMRA and called tools4ever in the UK and asked for help. The phone was answered after five rings. I got to speak to a real person who knew the product inside out and who was keen to help. I explained the situation and they talked me through the creation of an UMRA script to fix both NTFS and share permissions. They stayed on the line whilst I ran the script against a couple of users. Next day (Tuesday) we had ran the UMRA script against all our student user areas by lunchtime and we stopped getting support calls on this. OFSTED came in the following day and everything worked perfectly and has done ever since.
We couldn’t have done this manually in the time frame available. UMRA paid for itself right there and then and I now consider it an essential part of our disaster recovery toolkit.
