NTFS

The NTFS Target Connector connects the HelloID Identity and Access Management (IAM) solution from Tools4ever's NTFS to the connector responsible for creating the account. The NTFS Target Connector ensures that users' home directories automatically have the correct NTFS permissions and manages these permissions. This article provides more information about this integration and its capabilities.

What is NTFS?

New Technology File System (NTFS) is a file system used by modern Microsoft Windows operating systems, specifically Windows NT and later versions. NTFS is based on HPFS, a file system that Microsoft developed for OS/2 as a replacement for the older FAT file system.

Why is an NTFS Integration Useful?

In environments that use an on-premises file server, each user has a personal folder known as a home directory. This folder must have the correct NTFS permissions on the file system to function properly. Configuring this is not only time-consuming but also complex. The NTFS Target Connector automates the process. The NTFS connector supports integration with common systems, such as:

  • Active Directory
  • Entra ID

Further details about the integration with these source systems can be found later in this article.

HelloID for NTFS Helps You With

Efficient account management: Assigning the correct NTFS permissions to a home directory is a necessary but time-consuming process. The NTFS Target Connector automates this process to a significant degree, increasing efficiency.

Reliable technology: Managing NTFS permissions is a complex process that is often automated using scripts. The NTFS connector eliminates the need for separate scripts, ensuring a uniform approach within your organization.

Error-free and consistent operations: The NTFS Target Connector standardizes the assignment of NTFS permissions to home directories, ensuring error-free and consistent operations. This is important because users cannot work with their home directory without the correct NTFS permissions.

Integrating with your IGA process: Not only is assigning NTFS permissions important, but also managing them adequately. This includes revoking permissions in a timely manner when a user is offboarded. The NTFS connector automates this process and provides assurance.

How HelloID Integrates with NTFS

HelloID uses the NTFS connector as an additional step during the onboarding and offboarding process. During onboarding, HelloID creates the person's account. This account is assigned a home directory, which must be configured with the correct NTFS permissions. HelloID automates the assignment of these permissions using the NTFS connector.

The IAM solution connects the NTFS Target Connector to the connector responsible for account creation, making the account data available within the NTFS connector. The NTFS connector then assigns the correct Access Control Lists (ACLs) to the home directory, providing it with the required NTFS permissions. The NTFS connector provides a straightforward configuration for determining the specific NTFS permissions to be applied to the ACL on an account's home directory.

Change in source system Procedure in NTFS
New employee When a new employee joins, HelloID automatically creates a user account and the corresponding home directory through the integration with your source system. The NTFS connector ensures that this folder is created in a specific share on the on-premises file server and that the folder is assigned the correct permissions.
Employee offboarding HelloID automatically deactivates the user account in Active Directory or Entra ID, for example, and notifies the relevant stakeholders. Through the NTFS Target Connector, HelloID also revokes the NTFS permissions from the user's home directory.

Connecting NTFS to Systems via HelloID

The NTFS connector is primarily used in combination with another target connector responsible for creating accounts. Some common integrations include:

  • Microsoft Active Directory to NTFS integration: The integration between Microsoft Active Directory and NTFS ensures that when a new user account is created by the Microsoft Active Directory connector, the corresponding home directory is assigned the correct NTFS permissions. This automates a process that can otherwise be time-consuming and complex.

  • Microsoft Entra ID to NTFS integration: In this case, the Microsoft Entra ID connector is connected to the NTFS Target Connector. The Microsoft Entra ID connector handles account creation, while the NTFS connector ensures that the corresponding home directory is assigned the correct permissions.

HelloID supports more than 200 connectors, offering a broad range of integration capabilities between NTFS and other source and target systems. The connector and integration catalog is continuously expanded, enabling integration with all popular systems.
