UMRA Simplifies Student Data Management in the SIS
Connection with E-Learning Environment BlackBoard
Many schools are rapidly deploying an e-learning environment where each student, teacher and often parents, have access to information with his or her login. Which information a student or teacher can see and what actions can be performed is determined by the roles imposed on the users account.
Managing BlackBoard by the system administrator is a time consuming task when data is maintained (accounts created, modified and deleted) manually. The School Information System (SIS) is accurately managed by the administration and contains important information for each school. It is the perfect source of information for BlackBoard.
UMRA offers the functionality to automatically manage student data in BlackBoard. The connection extracts relevant information from any SIS (e.g. Banner, JPAMS or Power Campus) and turns it over to BlackBoard. Every time student information changes, this information is automatically detected by UMRA and updated in BlackBoard. It is even possible to load the hierarchy information from the SIS in BlackBoard. Specific actions which can be automated include; create user; update user name, job, or location; change roles; reset password; get all users; and delete user. Functionality can also be extended to additional actions such as class rosters for enrollment.

In addition to managing user accounts, groups and courses can be automatically updated in BlackBoard.
Integrated e-mail environments like Office 365 and Google Apps can also be automatically updated using the connection. Control of the email environment and its associated applications remain at the school. This connection avoids duplication, ensures that the information in BlackBoard is always up-to-date, saves valuable time and reduces the risk of errors.
Access to the e-learning environment can be kept synchronized to the directory service. This can be done by logging in once to the network to automatically access the e-learning environment Single Sign-on (SSO) or through password synchronization. The network password stays the same as thee-learning environment password. The student user has to remember only one password thereby reducing calls to the helpdesk to reset forgotten passwords.
