Windows Policy Template Files
The default Windows 2008/2003/XP/2000/NT policy template files comprise a cluttered textual summary of various policies. The templates can be regarded as the source code for policies, but the default templates available in Windows do not contain all possible settings, and modifying the templates is a complicated business to say the least.

Configuration is one of the most complex aspects of network administration. All network components, such as user accounts, workstations and servers, have to be configured to ensure their proper operation. Policies can be used to configure settings for users, groups and workstations. Whenever a user logs in, all policies associated with that user will be applied.
Policy template files are integrated into the software which uses the configuration, but in many cases the policy template is either unavailable or lacking in quality. Thus the administrator will have to modify the existing template or develop a new one. This can be a time-consuming affair, due in part to the complex format of policy template files. With Policy Template Editor, administrators can modify existing template files with consummate ease and without errors, and can create new policy template files.
Existing Templates
Administrators can use Policy Template Editor to modify existing template files. All they need to do is select the template and open it in the application.
New Templates
To create a new template, administrators can select File – New on the menu bar. This will open up a completely empty policy template window.
Policy Classes
Policy template settings are always associated with either a user or computer. This is why Policy Template Editor makes a distinction between two policy classes: User and Machine.
Policy category
Policies are grouped in policy categories along with the corresponding information. This allows network administrators to create a hierarchical policy structure.
Time Savings
Network administrators can save considerable time because they no longer have to create customized policy template files. Creating or modifying small template files can easily consume four hours or more. By utilizing Policy Template Editor, this can be accomplished in a few minutes. The time saving will be even greater for larger template files.
Ease of Management
By creating template files for IT assets such as applications, these assets can be easily managed across the network.
