User Management Resource Administrator has been an incredible help to our IT organization. It has cut user creation time from 10-15 minutes per user to 10-15 seconds. This saves a great deal of man hours each week, which saves money.

Case scenario:

Assign an Exchange mail box for each existing user account

Introduction

  • Exchange 2000 or later active and accessible from the local computer
  • A CSV formatted text file containing the username or fullname of each existing user

Environment

The environment involves a mid-size company with 1 central domain (mycompany.com), 1 central domain controller running Windows 2003 (DC01), 1 file server running Windows 2000 (FILESRV01) and one database server running SQL Server 2000. The domain currently hosts 500 users. MyCompany's users currently use a third-party email client in combination with a pop3-based mail server.

Problem

MyCompany management has decided to implement Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Outlook for all users. You are authorized to purchase and install a new server (EXCHSRV01) and assign new mail boxes for all Active Directory user accounts. In order to keep the users' SIDs intact, the Active Directory user accounts must be updated to reflect the new Exchange mail box. Also, MyCompany has created a specific policy for the address lists, which means the Active Directory display name has to be updated as well.

Solution Guide

Let's first discuss the logical steps needed to perform the Exchange mail box creation and Active Directory update. First, we need to look up the user account in Active Directory, then create a new mail box on the user object with custom email addresses, and (if necessary) update the users' display names so they are easy to sort in address lists.
