Introduction

This case discusses the project of assigning a new Exchange 2000/2003 mail box for existing user accounts and how to configure User Management Resource Administrator to perform all operations.

Requirements

Assign an Exchange mail box for each existing user accountUser Management Resource Administrator 6.0 or later
Assign an Exchange mail box for each existing user accountExchange 2000 or later active and accessible from the local computer

Environment

The environment involves a mid-size company with 1 central domain (mycompany.com), 1 central domain controller running Windows 2003 (DC01), 1 file server running Windows 2000 (FILESRV01) and one database server running SQL Server 2000. The domain currently hosts 500 users. MyCompany's users currently use a third-party email client in combination with a pop3-based mail server.

Problem

MyCompany management has decided to implement Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Outlook for all users. You are authorized to purchase and install a new server (EXCHSRV01) and assign new mail boxes for all Active Directory user accounts. In order to keep the users' SIDs intact, the Active Directory user accounts must be updated to reflect the new Exchange mail box. Also, MyCompany has created a specific policy for the address lists, which means the Active Directory display name has to be updated as well.

Solution Guide

Let's first discuss the logical steps needed to perform the Exchange mail box creation and Active Directory update. First, we need to look up the user account in Active Directory, then create a new mail box on the user object with custom email addresses, and (if necessary) update the users' display names so they are easy to sort in address lists.
