SpaceGuard SRM 10-minute Quickstart

This 10-minute quickstart guide will assist you in using SpaceGuard SRM immediately. Besides basic SpaceGuard SRM console and agent installation, this quickstart covers the complete configuration of a special Auto-Add quota on all home directories, including warning popups when nearing the quota and enforcement upon exceeding the quota. You can optionally watch the configuration section of this quickstart as video (Windows Media Player required).

Prerequisites

• Make sure the latest version (SpaceGuard SRM 6.1 Build 1115) of SpaceGuard SRM is installed. The software is available for download from www.tools4ever.com.
• For local agent deployments, log on as a local administrator on your computer. For remote agent deployment, for example to a remote file server, make sure you log on with an account that has local administrator priviliges on the target computer..

1. SpaceGuard SRM console installation

• Install the SpaceGuard SRM software on the computer. The SpaceGuard SRM software is contained in the package SetupSpaceGuard.exe. This single package contains all SpaceGuard SRM software components.

2. SpaceGuard SRM agent deployment

• Start the SpaceGuard SRM console using Start > Tools4ever > SpaceGuard SRM > SpaceGuard SRM.
• The SpaceGuard SRM console will present an empty quota overview window and a network browse tree on the left side of the screen. To manage quotas on a file server, SpaceGuard SRM needs to deploy an agent to that file server. To deploy an agent now, navigate to the file server using the network browse tee and double click on the computer name.
• SpaceGuard SRM will popup a dialog asking your permission to deploy an agent on the target computer. Click Yes to continue.
• The SpaceGuard SRM - Service Setup dialog appears. This dialog is used to specify all the parameters needed to install the SpaceGuard SRM agent. The server name and the license code (DEMO) are specified automatically. Leave the Serial number to its default setting and press the button Install.
• If you encounter error messages during the agent installation, restart the installation but do not yet click the Install button. Instead, click the Advanced -> button to open up the advanced details. Use our Ask Tools4ever system to get assistance in installing the SpaceGuard SRM agent. When specifying your information in the Ask Tools4ever system, make sure you specify all parts of the advanced section of the setup service dialog.

When the installation completes, the dialog will disappear and the SpaceGuard SRM agent has been started. All local disks on the target computer are now accessible for managing quotas.

3. Managing quotas - view this section as video (requires Windows Media Player)

This example will show you how to manage Auto-Add quotas. The benefit for this special type of quota is that SpaceGuard will automatically deploy quotas for each home directory when they are created. This removes the need to create a new quota every time a new home directory is created.

• Use the network browse tree to navigate to the root directory where all home directories are stored, for example "Users".
• Right-click on the folder "Users" and select Auto-Add -> Add...

• Leave the excluded directories dialog empty and click Next to continue.
• SpaceGuard SRM supports saving the quota configuration for later use. Since we do not yet have any policies, select "Specify quota limits".
• Specify a quota size. This is the base size used by SpaceGuard SRM to calculate whether a quota has been exceeded. Specify 25 and click Next to continue.

• Now we are going to define which action SpaceGuard SRM should take when the quota is (about to be) exceeded. This is called a limit and in this example we will configure 2 limits. Click Add to create a new limit.

• Each limit can be triggered by a threshold, indicated by a percentage of the quota size. When you want to send a warning message to the user nearing his quota, we would have to send that message before his quota is exceeded. We could use a threshold of 80% of the quota size (25MB), this means the limit will be triggered at 20MB. Specify 80 and click Add to assign an action to this limit.
• Select Popup and click OK.
• From the "Default messages" menu, choose the "Warning - Reaching Quota" and click OK.
• Click OK to finish the configuration is this limit.
• Back at the limits overview, click Add to add another limit.
• This time, we are going to enforce the quota by revoking write access to the user assigned to the home directory. We will use the threshold of 100% to make sure the limit is triggered when the quota is exceeded. Leave the threshold at 100 and click Add to assign an action to this limit.
• Select Revoke access and click OK.
• Leave the settings to their defaults and click OK to acknowledge.

• Click OK to finish configuring this limit and return to the limits overview.
• Click Next to continue.

• To save the settings we just configured, enter a custom name such as "80% Send Popup, 100% Revoke access" and click Finish to apply these settings.

The Auto-Add quota is now active on the root folder "Users". All first-level directories under this root will automatically get a quota of 25MB each.
