About the BCS
As the industry body for IT professionals, and a Chartered Engineering Institution for Information Technology (IT), the BCS exists to provide service and support to the IT community, including IT practitioners and employers of IT practitioners. The Society also acts to generate public awareness and appreciation of the concomitant social and economic benefits of IT.

The BCS was formed to establish and maintain appropriate standards of education and experience for persons engaged in the profession or practice of IT and Computing or those entering upon courses of study in Computing and allied subjects.

The problem.
The Society has a large number of servers ranging from Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Linux and AIX and requires statistical information from these for proactive maintenance, management and procurement.

For instance, there was a need to monitor disk space and cpu performance in order to manage capacity and estimate if or when an upgrade or replacement server might be required. In addition, a method of providing statistical information on the availability of the systems was required.

The search and answer.
